Black Coffee, who is considered one of the world’s greatest house music artists who blends electronic music with Jazz, R&B and Soul music and enriches it with African rhythms, held a sold-out event at the iconic venue Madison Square Garden and with this concert, New York’s world-famous He became the first South African DJ and producer to perform at The Garden. Black Coffee’s sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden was described as a historic moment for their art and music.
Black Coffee, who has been deemed worthy of numerous awards, also has the title of being the first African DJ to receive the BET Award and the Grammy award.
Born in 1976 in Umlazi KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo – under the stage name Black Coffee – grew up in Mthatha, the hometown of South Africa’s freedom hero Nelson Mandela; The artist, who lost the use of his left arm after being hit by a taxi heading towards the crowd celebrating Mandela’s release from prison in 1990, has been making music using his right arm ever since.
Black Coffee broke the world record for the “longest DJ set played with one arm” by performing 60 hours of uninterrupted music at their concert in Cape Town.
Black Coffee also succeeded in firmly ratifying his unmistakable production prowess and has continuously shattered boundaries, most consequentially with his remix for the inimitable Alicia Keys, a collaboration with international superstar, Drake as well as landing an Executive Producer credit on Drake’s recent “Honestly Nevermind” LP not to mention Black Coffee’s 2022 Grammy win for “Best Dance/Electronic Album” in respect of his 6th studio album “Subconsciously” which featured the likes of Pharrell Williams, Usher, Diplo, RyX, David Guetta and more.
